The ultimate prize for the best-dressed woman at the country cups used to be a sash — and bragging rights.
This year for the first time Country Cups Fashions on the Field heats will take in big race meetings across WA and culminate in the final at Ascot on November 26 for a $25,000 prize pack that includes $10,000 for shopping and a Hong Kong trip.
Previous WA Country Cups faces Nikki Gogan and Alana McLean believe the change will raise the stakes at ladies race days in places such as Carnarvon and Kalgoorlie, with heats to begin at Bunbury Ladies Day on Sunday.
“It’s extra exciting in the country to have a race day competition with a massive prize,” Ms Gogan said.
Judges will look for attention to detail, style, originality, poise, grooming and knowledge and interpretation of current trends.
Those game to leave the city for a regional heat should expect a different experience.
Ms Gogan says she could not go past the two-up ring in Broome and Ms McLean fondly recalls the local characters seen at country cups, such as the man in Pinjarra who split his pants showing off Zoolander moves in the men’s heat.
